Carlo
Franchi
Biography
Carlo Franchi, born in Milan in 1938, raced only under the pseudonym "Gimax" and never competed under his real name. His son has also raced using the same name.
During the 1970s he was a regular in Italian sportscar racing. In 1978 he also took part in the European Sportscar Championship. The series was set up for that season after the World Sports Car Championship was cancelled, so that Group 6 prototypes could continue to race in Europe for a title of their own. Driving an Osella, he won the drivers' title in the 2-litre class.
In Formula One he was entered with Surtees for the 1978 Italian Grand Prix, but he failed to qualify, so he never started a World Championship race. In 1979 he also took part in the Dino Ferrari Grand Prix, a Formula One event outside the World Championship.
