Biography
Carl Scarborough was born in Benton, Illinois, on 3 July 1914. Before his starts at Indianapolis he raced in Michigan, Indiana and Ohio. In 1946 he won the Central States Racing Association national titles in midget car racing and in big car racing.
His two World Championship races were the 1951 and 1953 Indianapolis 500, which counted towards the Drivers' World Championship from 1950 to 1960. On both occasions he drove a Kurtis Kraft. In qualifying in 1951 he set the second fastest lap that had been recorded at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway up to that point, and he finished 18th. During the 1953 race he became unwell in the heat and died on 30 May 1953. Before the following year's race, the organisers brought in checks on whether the cars were adequately ventilated. He was inducted into the Michigan Motor Sports Hall of Fame in 1985.
