Biography
Bobby Rahal was born in Medina in the United States and came up through the SCCA's feeder categories. In 1977 he finished second to Gilles Villeneuve in the Formula Atlantic championship. In 1978 he raced in European Formula Three for Wolf and, towards the end of the year, drove for the Wolf Formula 1 team in the United States and Canadian Grands Prix. There was no seat for him in 1979, as Wolf ran only one car, which went to James Hunt.
From 1982 Rahal raced in the CART series, driving for Truesports until 1988. He won the 1986 Indianapolis 500 and the CART title that year, and he defended the championship in 1987. A third title followed in 1992, and he won 24 CART races in total. He retired as a driver in 1998. In 2000 he took a managerial role at the Jaguar Formula 1 team. As co-owner of his team, he won the Indianapolis 500 with Buddy Rice in 2004 and with Takuma Sato in 2020.
