Biography
Billy Garrett was born in 1933 in Princeton, Illinois. His father, John, also raced, competing in roadsters and sprint cars in California. Billy began his career in Southern California in roadsters and midgets, and won the URA midget championship in 1955 and 1956.
Between 1956 and 1958 he made 18 starts in USAC Championship races, taking pole position at Langhorne in 1956. From 1950 to 1960 the Indianapolis 500 counted towards the Formula One World Championship. Garrett started the race in a Kuzma in 1956 and in a Kurtis Kraft in 1958, without scoring any championship points. A crash in the 1958 Rex Mays 100 at the Wisconsin State Fair Speedway ended his career. He was inducted into the National Midget Auto Racing Hall of Fame.
