Biography
William James Whitehouse, known as Bill, was born on 1 April 1909 in Plumstead, London. He began racing in 1949 in a Cooper 500, taking part in the national 500 cc races that later became Formula 3. Several wins and other strong placings followed.
His only Formula One World Championship race came on 17 July 1954, driving for Connaught. He retired with fuel system problems and finished without a championship point. He also entered a number of Formula One races that were not part of the World Championship.
Whitehouse died on 14 July 1957 in a Formula Two race at Reims. He was driving a works car there, after his privately entered Cooper T39 had suffered engine failure. Later in the same race, the American driver Herbert MacKay-Fraser was also killed.
