Biography
Ben Pon was born in Leiden in 1936. His only Formula One start came at the Dutch Grand Prix on 20 May 1962, his home race at Zandvoort. He drove a Porsche 787 entered by Ecurie Maarsbergen, the private team of his friend Carel Godin de Beaufort. Pon retired from the race after a crash and resolved never to race single-seaters again, a promise he kept.
He carried on in sports car racing, also with Porsche. Although he stopped racing professionally in sports cars in 1965, he finished seventh in the 1967 24 Hours of Le Mans, sharing a works Porsche 906 with Vic Elford. In 1972 he represented the Netherlands in skeet shooting at the Olympic Games, finishing 31st. Pon died in 2019.
