Asdrúbal
Fontes Bayardo
Biography
Asdrúbal Fontes Bayardo, known as "Pocho", was born on 26 December 1922 in Pan de Azúcar, Uruguay. From the middle to the end of the 1950s he raced in the Argentine Formula Libre. In October 1956 he won the first race ever held at the El Pinar circuit in Montevideo, and in November 1957 he won at Interlagos. On both occasions he drove a Maserati 4CLT fitted with a Chevrolet V8 engine.
In 1959 he travelled to Europe and was entered in the French Grand Prix, driving an older Maserati 250F for Scuderia Centro Sud. He set no time and failed to qualify, so he never started a World Championship race. He then returned to South America, where he carried on in Formula Libre and also took part in endurance races. Fontes Bayardo died in Montevideo on 9 July 2006. The Piriápolis street circuit is named after him.
