Artem
Markelov
Biography
Artem Markelov was born in Moscow on 10 September 1994. He started karting in 2006, racing mostly in Russia. In 2011 he moved into single-seaters in ADAC Formel Masters with Motopark Academy, taking a win at the Red Bull Ring and finishing fourth overall. He then raced in German Formula Three, finishing seventh in 2012 and runner-up to his team-mate Marvin Kirchhöfer in 2013.
In 2014 he stepped up to GP2 with Russian Time. His first seasons brought 24th and then 13th in the standings, with a first podium at Spa-Francorchamps. In 2016 he won his first GP2 race at Monaco and finished tenth. The series became Formula 2 in 2017, and Markelov won its very first race. He also won at Spielberg, Spa-Francorchamps, Jerez and Abu Dhabi, and Russian Time took the teams' title. In 2018 he finished fifth overall with three wins.
In February 2018 Renault named him a development driver. He drove in an official Formula One session for the first time at the 2018 Russian Grand Prix and later took part in the Young Driver Test in Abu Dhabi. He never started a Grand Prix. When Russian Time withdrew from Formula 2, he lost his seat for 2019. He stood in for MP Motorsport at Monaco, finishing sixth and fourth. After Anthoine Hubert died following the crash at Spa-Francorchamps, Arden signed him for the final rounds at Sochi and Abu Dhabi. In 2020 he drove for HWA Racelab and scored five points, in what proved to be his last Formula 2 season.
