Biography
Art Cross was born in Jersey City in 1918 and began racing midget cars in 1938. He served as a tank commander in the Second World War and returned to midgets afterwards.
From 1950 to 1960 the Indianapolis 500 counted towards the Formula One World Championship. Cross made four World Championship starts between 1952 and 1955, each in a Kurtis Kraft. In 1952 he finished fifth in the Indianapolis 500 and became the first winner of the race's Rookie of the Year award. In 1953 he came second there behind Bill Vukovich, and both drivers completed the race without a relief driver. It remained his only podium. In the 1953 World Championship standings he finished tenth. He was inducted into the National Midget Auto Racing Hall of Fame in 1992 and died in 2005.
