Biography
Alessandro Giuseppe Caffi was born on 18 March 1964 in Rovato, Italy. He spent three years in Italian Formula 3 from 1984 to 1986, finishing second in 1984 and 1985 and third in 1986. In 1985 he also won the FIA European Formula 3 Cup.
He made his Formula One debut for Osella at the 1986 Italian Grand Prix, his home race. He started from the back of the grid and finished last, six laps down and unclassified. In 1987 he contested a full season with Osella, making 14 starts from 16 entries and failing to qualify twice. His only classified result was twelfth at San Marino. For 1988 he moved to Scuderia Italia, driving a Dallara. He failed to pre-qualify at the opening round in Brazil, and his best finish that year was seventh in Portugal.
In 1989, driving the Dallara, he took fourth at Monaco and sixth in Canada, and those four points left him 19th in the World Championship. His team-mate was Andrea de Cesaris. In Hungary he qualified third. In 1990 he drove for Arrows alongside Michele Alboreto, scoring two points with fifth place at Monaco and ending the year 16th in the championship, his best final position. In 1991 he drove for Footwork but started only two of his twelve entries, finishing tenth in Japan and fifteenth in Australia. In 1992 he was entered by Andrea Moda but never started a race, which ended his Formula One career at 56 starts.
Afterwards he raced mainly in sports cars and touring cars, chiefly in the United States, where he took part in an IRL test at Pikes Peak Raceway in 1998. He entered the Grand Prix Masters series in 2006 and the IRC Monte Carlo Rally in 2011 in a Skoda Fabia S2000. In 2016 he won the race for three-litre historic Formula One cars at the Monaco Grand Prix Historique in an Ensign N176. That same year he founded Alex Caffi Motorsport for the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series, a team that was renamed Academy Motorsport in 2021.
