Biography
Alejandro de Tomaso was born in Buenos Aires on 10 July 1928. In 1957 he raced for Scuderia Centro Sud, a privateer team based in Modena. He made his Formula One debut on 13 January 1957 at the Argentine Grand Prix, driving a Ferrari 500 to ninth place. Two weeks later he shared a Maserati 250F with Luigi Piotti in the Formula Libre Buenos Aires Grand Prix and again finished ninth.
His second and final world championship start came at the 1959 United States Grand Prix. Driving a Cooper T43 for O.S.C.A., he retired after 13 laps with brake failure. He never scored a championship point.
That same year he founded the sports car maker De Tomaso Automobili, which also built racing cars, including a Formula One car for Frank Williams' team in 1970. De Tomaso died in Modena on 21 May 2003.
