Biography
Al Keller was born in Alexander in the United States in 1920. He raced in NASCAR's top series from 1949 to 1956 and won two races in 1954. Driving a Jaguar, he won at Linden Airport in New Jersey, which made him the first driver in that division to win in a foreign-built car. From 1954 he gradually moved over to the AAA and USAC Champ Car series.
The Indianapolis 500 counted towards the Formula 1 World Championship from 1950 to 1960, and Keller was an Indy 500 driver: his five world championship starts were all in that race, one each year from 1955 to 1959. He drove Kurtis Kraft cars and, in 1959, a Kuzma. In 1955 he was involved in the crash that claimed the life of Bill Vukovich.
In Champ Cars he made 32 starts and finished second twice, at Atlanta in 1956 and at Milwaukee in 1961. His best Indy 500 result was fifth place in 1961. Keller died later that year following a crash in a Champ Car at the Arizona State Fairgrounds track.
