Biography
Al Herman, whose full name was Homer Gerald Herman, was born on 15 March 1926 in Topton, Pennsylvania. He raced in the AAA and USAC Championship Car series. From 1950 to 1960 the Indianapolis 500 counted towards the Formula 1 World Championship, and Herman started it in 1955, 1956, 1957, 1959 and 1960. Those five races were his only World Championship starts. In them he drove cars built by Kurtis Kraft, Dunn and Ewing.
His best result was seventh place in the 1955 Indianapolis 500, which earned him the Rookie of the Year award. Herman died on 18 June 1960, aged 34, in West Haven, Connecticut, following a crash in a midget car race at the West Haven Speedway.
