History

The Sirius Autodrom stands in the settlement of Sirius, next to the Black Sea resort city of Sochi in Krasnodar Krai, Russia. The permanent circuit was built around the Olympic Park that hosted the 2014 Winter Olympic Games. It was designed by the German architect Hermann Tilke. The tarmac was not laid until after the closing ceremony of the Games, and the FIA gave its final approval in August 2014. The venue was first called the Sochi International Street Circuit and the Sochi Olympic Park Circuit, and later the Sochi Autodrom. It has carried the name Sirius Autodrom since 1 April 2024.

The Formula One layout measured 5.848 km, had 18 corners and ran clockwise. The grid was on the northern edge of the Olympic Park beside the railway station, and the track headed south-west towards the Black Sea coast. It passed around the Medals Plaza and made three turns around the Bolshoy Ice Dome. A series of tight corners followed, before the track turned north along the edge of the park. Two 90-degree right-handers finished the lap.

The first World Championship round, the Russian Grand Prix, took place in 2014, and eight races were held up to 2021. Mercedes won all eight: Lewis Hamilton five times, Valtteri Bottas twice and Nico Rosberg once. The constructors' title was decided here in both 2014 and 2015. The race planned for 2022 did not take place, so the 2021 event was the last World Championship race at the circuit.

The grand prix layout was later dismantled. What remains is a short configuration of 2.313 km in which turn 1 links to turn 13. The final race on the long layout was the Russian Endurance Cup on 4 November 2023. The venue also hosted GP2, GP3, Formula 2 (2018 to 2021) and the TCR International Series.
